We need your support!

We, the workers of Experimental Station, are excited to announce our union. We’re proud of the work that we do—from our bike shop and youth program, to our farmers market, to our nutrition education, to our arts and culture programming, to our matching Link purchases of fresh food across Illinois, to our many projects and collaborations with tenants, partners, and neighbors. We are eager to play a central role in Experimental Station’s future, together.

We ask that you, as members of our community who enliven our programs and building, sign our petition to Connie Spreen, the Executive Director of Experimental Station, and its Board of Directors, to support our demand for voluntary recognition:

I support Experimental Station staff and their:

  • right to unionize

  • demand that Experimental Station’s Executive Director and Board voluntarily recognize their union, immediately

  • right to a safe workplace

  • right to address grievances and seek accountability

  • capacity to collectively determine Experimental Station’s future

  • commitment to address issues of white supremacy and sexism

For almost two decades, Experimental Station has pioneered models for sustainable community infrastructure. It invites innovative projects, promotes resource sharing, and fosters community—from Blackstone Bicycle Works, to the 61st Street Farmers Market, to our arts and cultural programming, to Link Up Illinois. We’re also blessed to work with amazing tenants—Build Coffee, Civic Projects, Hyde Park Herald, Invisible Institute, and the South Side Weekly. Critical projects like Market Box have come from our many collaborations, and it is because of our collective hospitality that so many of our neighbors have such goodwill towards the space. But the Experimental Station project is more than a building, it is also everyone who is a part of our many communities.

We, the staff of Experimental Station, have come together and formed a union because our working conditions impact our ability to effectively serve the Woodlawn community and its surrounding neighborhoods. As staff we carry out the everyday work of our programs. We firmly believe that together we’re best situated to address our problems and foster our successes. Empowered staff make for better workplaces, and our union will make our work more sustainable. Our union is bigger than any of us. Our union will enable us to better pursue our shared mission of building independent cultural infrastructure on the South Side of Chicago and to more fully act as civic stewards in this collective project—where staff, tenants, and community members together shape what happens at Experimental Station.

“I believe in raising the voice of the individual and empowering people to confidently address the problems and concerns inherent to their workplace. I hope to see more success and growth like this throughout my community and intend to support it as I am able.”

“Solidarity forever.”

“As a former public employee and current nonprofit worker on the South Side, I support workers autonomy anywhere and everywhere, but especially here. This union is an excellent instantiation of the ES's stated values, and any nonprofit org should be honored to have a team so dedicated to their values that they would put forth their personal time and energy this way. No collective effort of self determination is made easy in our society, but each one is necessary to inch us closer to the liberated world we want. Solidarity.”

“Our workplaces and our society are stronger when workers have enforceable rights. Congratulations and solidarity to the Experimental Station workers!”

“Every worker should have the right to collectively bargain to improve their working situation, period.”

“The workers at Experimental Station have made the place a great space for communities to come together. I hope their wish to have a say in their workplace will be fully respected.”

“I'm a nurse in a unionized hospital and I know how critical having my union is to me. I fully support the workers at Experimental Station unionizing and their demands! Solidarity!”

“Because all working people should have fair treatment at work.”

“SEIU Local 73 Chicago Park District—all workers need a union, especially those in social services and in nonprofit industries.”

“In support of Experimental Station and their mission to encourage meaningful communication and address important issues of racism and sexism impacting the South Side community.”

“I love the Experimental Station and everyone deserves to organize to make their workplace happier, safer, and better!”

“From experiencing and witnessing wage theft at a small Woodlawn nonprofit, from being University Church board vice president and finance chair the year it evicted Sanctuary Cafe, and from working for two small nonprofits now, I know the importance of organized labor at small nonprofits! Thanks for your work.”

“I love unions.”

“As a neighbor and frequenter of Experimental Station's various programs, I support the unionizing of its workers!”

“Everyone benefits from unions”

“I am so proud of ES workers for taking steps to build a workplace that is safe, accountable, and more able to address harm.”

“I'm a Teamster at UChicago.”

“I support all worker's right to unionize.”

“Nonprofit management needs to follow the lead of the workers! This union won’t be stopped by a refusal to voluntarily recognize it - it will only waste everyone’s time, energy, and resources to force an election when the workers have already spoken.”

“Full solidarity with my friends, colleagues, partners and former building-mates.”

“I am a proud member of Chicago DSA, which has endorsed Experimental Station’s union drive. As a socialist, I will always support workers’ right to organize, but especially when it comes to creating beautiful public community spaces.”

“I stand in solidarity with every worker fighting for just working conditions and for equity in their workplace.”

“Unions protect workers and fight for fair wages and safe workplaces.”

“Everyone has a right to join a union, and every employer shoud recognize that right.”

“Experimental Station is a cultural and unique community asset on Chicago’s South Side. I believe that by unionizing, it will ensure accountability that is essential to make sure that it’s efforts are sustainable, impactful and equitable.”

“I love the variety of projects in our community that the Experimental Station supports, and I'd love to see the space and community grow; recognizing the union will provide space for growth while maintaining a safe, equitable, and transparent workplace for the people who make it happen.”

“I would love to see Experimental Station formally embody the communal ethic that has made the orgs and programs at ES so beloved on the South Side. With recognition of the union, ES can create a more vibrant, collaborative, inclusive, and responsive environment and lead the way for what workplaces can look like in Chicago.”

“All workers deserve a union. Union busting is disgusting. Commit to employee collective capacity to determine ES's future and address your issues with white supremacy and sexism NOW.”

“Union busting? It’s disgusting!”

“As someone who is a part of a union myself, I’ve experienced that first hand and I fully support the staff at Experimental Station unionizing. People unionize when management is unreasonable and unwilling to listen to their employees. The fact that the Board didn’t even let any of the employees talk on the call shows they’re not willing to hear feedback or negotiate in a productive way. This just shows even further that the employees have every right to unionize and that there is a need to unionize.”

“Because every worker has the right to form and join a union, without employer interference. If the employer has a problem with the union, they should deal with it at the bargaining table.”

“People deserve to collectively organize for the things they care about and to seek a level playing field with their bosses. Solidarity is the biggest strength we have!”

“I love the Experimental Station, and I want their staff to unionize so that they will be empowered to address problems and work toward solutions in a safe and equitable work environment.”

“Cultural workers and all laborers for that matter deserve rights to unionize in Chicago and beyond”

“I’m a Build coffee drinker and all around Experimental Station fan. I’m really excited the staff have decided to unionize because of what I know about them: they’re smart, committed, effective community builders. And they should have a bigger say in the future of the building.”

“I stand in solidarity with the Experimental Station workers who deserve basic rights and accountability and transparency from management.”

“I truly appreciate all the programs of the Experimental Station and would love to support them back in any means.”

“I support the union so people can be treated fairly!”

“Solidarity. We'll be with you until you're at the bargaining table and until you get a fair contract!”

“I’m a past program manager and I would like to see equity in the community bike shop known as Blackstone Bicycle works.”

“I support workers. If the employees want a union, then they should be entitled to recognition and the willing cooperation of the Board of Directors to negotiate on more equal terms. Those who choose to sit on Boards should not regard the mission of an organization as separate from those whose labor makes that mission possible. Your workers are not expendable.
Ask yourselves: Did you join the Board to engage in union-busting? Did you join the Board to stand in direct opposition to employees? You can’t say that you support unions generally, and remain unwilling to recognize and work in tandem with a union locally. This is where your idealism is tested, and better to choose collective efficacy alongside employees than to side with the tired and lame lies of anti-union law firms.
Don’t believe the hype. Don’t buy into the predicted “doom and gloom” that a union will remove the voice of your workers, or turn over control to a “third-party.”
Unions improve the material lives of workers. Full-stop. The community supports this unionization effort as we learn of it, and hopefully the Board will “wake up” to this new reality. And as a Board Member, if you aren’t willing to support employee collective bargaining, then you shouldn’t be sitting on a community based nonprofit organization.”

“As a long time volunteer and employee of a number of community bike shops, I recognize the hard work of employees and their rights to unionize. So often the outward politics of organizations fall short within those organizations and I support efforts by workers to make sure they are treated with dignity and respect by their Boards and management.”

“ES workers deserve to hold leadership accountable”

“Former employee that didn't receive fair treatment.”

“in general: i stand in solidarity with all workers deciding to pool power and collectively determine their shared future! and in particular: i believe in the mission of the experimental station, as it is honed and reproduced every day by the ppl whose labor make the place possible!”

“everyone should have access to a safe workplace and feel represented in the organization no matter the position”

“People deserve fair treatment.”

“Workers have a right to unionize, especially in the face of antiblackness, sexism, and discrimination at an organization that supposedly cares about the community it inhabits. Caring for the community starts with caring for your employees.”

“Solidarity from a CTU member!”

“I feel outraged and saddened and disappointed to hear that ES has laid off all Blackstone Bicycle Works employees!! This is not what ES stands for to me. In fact, I'm surprised that ES staff are not already unionized!!! Yes, ES is subject to capitalism like the rest of us... yes, it is a corporation that "must create and apply budgets, follow standard accounting practices, pay its bills", etc etc... But ES, are you true to your stated guiding value of mutualism? Because that to me IS what ES is about. A physical space, a hub, "where individuals matter", supporting visions and realizations of a better world. Get it together ES!!! Take this moment as we're coming out the other end of the pandemic to deeply reflect on what ES is and what it can be.”

“I have donated to Experimental Station before, and it’s only with the dedicated workers that they are able to continue serving the community, so empowering them (and signing this letter) is the logical next step.”

“Unionized workplaces make healthier and more equitable communities!”

“Every worker should have the protection and support of a union.”

“ES workers have the right to unionize and demand safe and accountable working conditions. This is important to me as a neighbor in Hyde Park. Solidarity!”

“This union sounds wonderful and in direct alignment with the mission and values of ES - I'm so excited for when the ED & board recognize the union! What a great way to recognize the strength and solidarity of our community and workers.”

“I live in the community and strongly believe that investing in businesses that support their workers enhances our community and the businesses footprint in the community”

“Because I love the Experimental Station and want it to flourish going forward—and that means having a union!”

“Solidarity! Every worker deserves a union and the ability to act collectively will empower workers to better carry out the critical mission of the Experimental Station.”

“I completely agree with all of the demands on this list and I know that once the workers have a union they will be better positioned to ensure a safe workplace, address issues of white supremacy and sexism, and the ability to collectively determine Experimental Station's future.”

“Every worker is entitled to a union...FULL STOP.”

“Workers need unions. Everyone should have one.”

“I support the amazing team who make Experimental Station a wonderful asset to our community.”

“As a social worker and proud union member, I strongly support Experimental Station's workers' right to unionize!”

“I support the right of workers to organize and claim genuine decision-making power in their workplaces! Unionizing benefits not only the workers but the community being served.”

“Every worker in the world deserves the right to have democratic control over their workspace, conditions, wages, and concerns!”

“Unions are important!”

“I supported this company through donations and wish to support the workers seeking fair and equitable employment through unionization.”

“I’m a former employee and lover of the space! I believe that this action would only impact the space and the programming in the most positive of ways!”

“Unions are important!”

“ES has been an important fixture of my time in Hyde Park and I want its workers to get the support and compensation they need!”

“I trust that the staff of Experimental Station know what they need in order to carry out the organization's mission and serve their community to the best of their ability. By forming a union, these employees recognize they can advocate more effectively for resources, policies, etc. that will make work better, which will then make service provision better. The community will benefit, the workers will benefit, and the organization will benefit.”

“Inequality anywhere is inequality everywhere & a healthy workplace is one that is unionized.”

“I'm a Kenwood neighbor and have always appreciated the Experimental Station as a place to socialize, work, collaborate and grow community. The workers make the Experimental Station what it is, and I support the right of all workers to unionize and collectively bargain for safe and accountable working conditions. The Experimental Station staff should absolutely have a stake in the future of the space itself, and I fully support their union!”

“I'm a regular customer at Build Coffee, I come to the farmer's market almost every weekend it's open, I get my bike repair done at Blackstone Bikes, and I always pick up the latest issue of South Side Weekly when I can. Experimental Station is one of the places that makes living in Hyde Park so great, and the employees who make it that way deserve to have the security and support that a union provides!”

“Every workplace should have a union!”

“Unions make the workers stronger.”

“I support the unionization of the staff at Experimental Station not just today but for the future of the organization, which is so important for the local community of which I am a part.”

“Everyone deserves a safe place to work. The best way to ensure everyone's safety is to allow them to unionize.”

“Every worker deserves a union and every boss needs to recognize them without tomfoolery or complaint. It is a worker’s unalienable right...PERIOD. Solidarity forever!”

“I stand in solidarity with the workers at Experimental Station! As a union organization in Chicago, I see how leadership in institutions will weaponize language of anti-oppression against the poor and working class. Leadership will claim that knowing the language is enough, while still leaning on oppressive systems. Unions give that power to the people.”

“I would hate for experimental station employees not to be respected and empowered to have control over their jobs and workplaces. If you treat your employees well, there’s no reason to fear a union, you should welcome it and work with the union to make sure everyone is happy and supported.”

“Long time coming! All ships rise on the Union tide!”

“I value both the Experimental Station and the workers who are a part of it. I think that they deserve to have a collective voice and be able to form a union and advocate for themselves as a group.”

“The staff of the Experimental Station are hardworking, creative, and deeply committed. They deserve a union to keep them safe and make sure their needs are being met.”

“I have seen first hand the work blackstone bikes does for underserved youth and know how much of that work is the product of the truly selfless commitment people like DJ have made to this project.”

“Unions only make workplaces stronger and more productive. Not recognizing a union is appalling.”

“I support the union of Experimental Station union employees for better workplace advocacy for employees.”

“A union helps protect worker’s rights. Everyone deserves to be protected!”

“I am Alumni and a former staff member if anyone knows there is a need for this union inside of ES it’s me! I support 100%”

“The non-profit sector has a well earned reputation for poor working conditions. All too often, dedicated passionate employees are left to work in conditions that others would have walked away from. I strongly support this union drive and hope that it spreads.”

“The people who work at the Experimental Station are among the most inspiring, hard-working, justice-oriented folks in Hyde Park. Their labor is extraordinarily valuable, doing more to create solidarity in the community than pretty much anything done by other institutions in the area. They deserve to have their labor recognized, for their claims and grievances responded to, and to be able to collectively determine the direction and orientation of the Experimental Station. Solidarity with the Experimental Station Union. Let them unionize!”

“I used to volunteer with Blackstone Bikes and the workers with that program are amazing. They deserve to unionize in order to provide the best programming possible.”

“Unions are critical! Mechanics deserve living wages, good working conditions, and health benefits.”

“I support the Experimental Station Union. Every worker should have a union, including non-profit workers. “I support the right for all workers to form a union!”

“All of the above mentioned reasons.”

“As a member of the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America, I think these workers deserve this.
